Our Philosophy
| |
We believe children feel the most secure, learn best, and
are the happiest when they can explore a diverse range of indoor
and outdoor activities which our experienced and caring staff
offer in an open setting.
We find value in having all ages play together. Of course, younger
children will learn from older but we also believe that older
can learn from younger, for example, by being more nurturing
and more patient, and that they can realize that they too were
at that age once. We remember one five-year-old remarking, "When
I was a little kid..."
We strive for verbalization and socialization -- we want the
children to get along with one another and to express their
feelings. Resolve their conflicts through words, not hurtful
deeds. To that end, we strictly disallow fighting games and
weapons play, and discourage superhero references in clothing,
shoes, and Share toys.
While we don't stress academics, we don't ignore them either.
Children learn best through play -- it is, after all, their
work. To that end, we do a lot of pre-reading, pre-writing,
and pre-math hands-on activities. Children who graduate from
here are fully prepared for kindergarten. See these links on
the importance of play. |
Reading
| |
As we believe reading to children to be vital in all areas
of learning, we read every day from books in our extensive library
of over 2,500 titles. We read to children in open free play
periods as well as in Circle
Time. Books are readily available in every play room for
children to choose and read at will. |
Lunch and Snacks
| |
We prepare and serve all the food
here, including hot lunches. We promote a healthy diet through
our vegetarian lunch and snacks. For example,
one of our lunches is brown rice, steamed broccoli, cheese,
applesauce, and milk.
If your child requires special foods, such as soy milk, you
provide the substitute items.
One day a month we have a LUNCH BOX DAY. Every child brings
a boxed lunch that day. Weather permitting, we will picnic in
the back yard -- sometimes we'll have a Teddy Bear picnic. |

Parent Involvement
While we do not require parents to volunteer here, we are
fortunate to have a high degree of parent involvement over the
years. Parent volunteers add immeasurably to their children's
experiences here and helps build a sense of community.
A Committee exists to help coordinate parent activities. They
have monthly meetings, schedule parent work days, at-home projects,
annual parent conferences, special topics meetings, such as
helping you find the right kindergarten for your graduating
child. At the beginning of the school year, we have a parent
mixer get-together.
The Committee also organizes the major fundraiser
for the year, usually in May, starting with our 20-year
Anniversary Party. Money from the fundraisers have contributed to many capital improvements over the years. Check out our past fundraiser projects.
